Over 360 top players confirmed for year-end showdown featuring Carlsen, Gukesh, and rising stars
Doha, Qatar will once again become the epicenter of elite chess as FIDE has announced a stellar lineup for the 2025 World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship. Set to take place from December 25-30 at Qatar University's Sports and Events Complex, the tournament brings together the sport's biggest names for a thrilling conclusion to the chess calendar.
A Championship-Caliber Field
The competition has drawn remarkable interest, with 233 players registered for the Blitz Open and 230 for the Rapid. Leading the charge is five-time World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen, who returns to the championship fresh from becoming a father earlier this year. After narrowly missing the Rapid crown and sharing gold in Blitz at last year's New York edition, the Norwegian legend will be looking to reclaim his dominance.
Standing in his way is reigning 2024 World Rapid champion Volodar Murzin, whose consistent strong performances throughout the year have marked him as a serious contender. But perhaps the most anticipated participant is the newly crowned World Champion Gukesh D, whose superb showing at the Zagreb tournament earlier this year has established him as one of the favorites in the Rapid format.
Generations Collide
The tournament represents a fascinating clash between chess generations. Established elite players including 2024 World Blitz co-champion Ian Nepomniachtchi, Fabiano Caruana, Anish Giri, Wesley So, and Levon Aronian will face off against an ambitious new wave of talent. Young contenders like Vincent Keymer, Arjun Erigaisi, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Praggnanandhaa R, Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, and Ediz Gürel are poised to challenge the established order.
Fans will also be treated to appearances by legendary figures Alexander Grischuk and Vasyl Ivanchuk, with Ivanchuk returning to the very city where he claimed the World Rapid title in 2016.

Women's Competition Showcases Depth
The Women's Rapid and Blitz will be equally competitive, featuring 130 players led by Women's World Champion Ju Wenjun. The field includes formidable competitors such as Zhu Jiner, Lei Tingjie, Aleksandra Goryachkina, and Humpy Koneru. Anna Muzychuk, who swept both the Women's Rapid and Blitz titles in Doha in 2016, returns alongside her sister Mariya, adding another compelling storyline to the competition.
A Testament to Chess's Global Appeal
FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich emphasized the significance of the lineup: "The lineup shows the immense strength and magnetism of the World Rapid & Blitz. We are pleased to see so many strong players in both the Open and the Women's competition confirming they will take part."

FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky added his enthusiasm: "The field is tremendously strong, and it is going to be a real chess feast. Once again, FIDE managed to gather nearly all the world's best players, and I am looking forward to a great sportive drama."
Qatar Chess Federation President Mohd Al-Mudahka highlighted the historic nature of the event: "Doha is now the only city to host the World Rapid & Blitz Championship twice, a milestone for chess and for sports in Qatar. It reflects our deep passion for the game and our commitment to delivering excellence."
High Stakes and Historic Venue
With a prize fund exceeding €1,000,000 distributed across both Open and Women's competitions, the stakes are substantial. The championship marks Doha's return as host after nine years, since the memorable 2016 edition when Ivanchuk captured the Rapid title and Sergey Karjakin became Blitz World Champion.
As the chess world prepares for this six-day spectacle of rapid-fire brilliance, all eyes will be on Doha to see which players can handle the pressure and claim their place in chess history. The FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championship has traditionally been one of the year's most exciting and most-watched chess events, and the 2025 edition promises to uphold that storied tradition.
