The 2026 MotoGP season preparations kicked off at Valencia's Ricardo Tormo Circuit on Tuesday, with Trackhouse Aprilia's Raul Fernandez emerging as the fastest rider in an extended test session that showcased new technology and saw several rookies take their first official laps.

Fernandez clocked a best lap of 1:29.373s to top the timesheets, edging out factory Aprilia rider Marco Bezzecchi by just 0.027 seconds. The Spanish rider took control from 4:30 pm onwards and maintained his advantage through to the extended 5:30 pm finish. A damp track surface at the start forced organizers to extend the session until 5:30 pm with no lunch break, giving teams maximum opportunity to evaluate their 2026 machinery.

Yamaha's V4 Project Breaks Cover

The biggest story of the day was the public debut of Yamaha's new V4 engine configuration. After years of struggling with their traditional inline-four layout, the Japanese manufacturer has developed a V4 powerplant to close the gap to rivals like Ducati.

Fabio Quartararo led the charge for Yamaha's factory team, shooting to the top of the timesheets at the 2:30 pm checkpoint after switching from the inline M1 to the new V4. Each Yamaha rider had both engine configurations available, allowing direct comparisons between the old and new machinery.

By day's end, Quartararo had slipped to 15th position, finishing 0.554 seconds off pace. However, his early speed suggests the V4 project has genuine potential, even if significant development work remains. Teammate Alex Rins managed only four laps, ending the session in 19th position.

Razgatlioglu Impresses on MotoGP Debut

Triple World Superbike champion Toprak Razgatlioglu made his official MotoGP debut with Pramac Yamaha after a private test at Aragon the previous weekend. The Turkish rider focused exclusively on Yamaha's V4 configuration, finishing 18th and 1.294 seconds off the ultimate pace as the second-fastest Yamaha rider behind Quartararo.

For a first official test on unfamiliar machinery, it was an impressive performance that demonstrated why Yamaha secured his services. Razgatlioglu's transition from Superbikes to MotoGP will be one of the most fascinating storylines throughout 2026, and Tuesday's running suggests he's adapting quickly to the prototype machines.

Rookies and Stand-Ins Make Their Mark

Reigning Moto2 champion Diogo Moreira made his MotoGP debut with LCR Honda, completing 57 laps and finishing 21st as he began acclimatizing to the RC213V. Honda's move to concession rank C gives them additional testing freedoms for 2026, which should help accelerate their recovery program.

Nicolo Bulega stepped in to replace injured Marc Marquez at factory Ducati and posted the eighth-fastest time, finishing ahead of teammate Francesco Bagnaia, who suffered a late crash. Bulega's performance, coming off two seasons as Razgatlioglu's closest World Superbike rival, will have caught the attention of MotoGP teams looking for future talent.

Celestino Vietti made an unexpected appearance, replacing Franco Morbidelli at VR46 Ducati after the Italian sustained a hand injury in a bizarre grid accident during Sunday's season finale. Vietti completed 24 laps, taking advantage of an unexpected opportunity to sample premier class machinery.

Aprilia's Aerodynamic Development

Marco Bezzecchi attracted attention throughout the day with extensive new bodywork featuring black and white zebra stripes designed to conceal the underlying design. He tested multiple rear wing configurations as Aprilia explores various aerodynamic concepts to optimize their RS-GP package for 2026. Bezzecchi briefly led the timesheets before Fernandez reclaimed top spot in the final hour.

Tight Competition Emerges

The final classification revealed how closely matched the field remains. Alex Marquez secured third for Gresini Ducati at 0.084s off pace, while rookie teammate Fermin Aldeguer impressed with fourth at 0.177s back. Pedro Acosta rounded out the top five for Red Bull KTM, followed by Maverick Viñales, Fabio Di Giannantonio, Bulega, Brad Binder, and Bagnaia. Just 0.358 seconds covered the top ten riders, suggesting 2026 could deliver exceptionally close racing.

Notably absent was reigning champion Marc Marquez, who remains sidelined with shoulder injuries and won't return until the Sepang test in Malaysia from February 3-5. Yamaha continues testing at Valencia on Wednesday, leveraging their concession D status to conduct private testing with race riders as it refines their V4 project.

Summary

The Valencia test provided an intriguing preview of the 2026 season. Fernandez's performance demonstrated that satellite teams can compete at the highest level, while Yamaha's V4 debut showed both promise and remaining challenges. Razgatlioglu's impressive first official test suggested his Superbike transition could be smoother than anticipated, and the debuts of Moreira and Vietti added fresh talent to the grid. With the top ten separated by less than four-tenths of a second and continued aerodynamic development across manufacturers, the 2026 season promises spectacular racing when it begins.
