The Iron Man Behind the Plate: Smith's Historic World Series
Will Smith saved his defining moment for the 11th inning of Game 7. His go-ahead home run secured the Dodgers' title and cemented his place in October lore.

In 73 grueling innings behind the plate, the most ever caught in a Fall Classic, Will Smith saved his defining moment for the 11th inning of Game 7. His go-ahead home run secured the Dodgers' title and cemented his place in October lore.

The Moment

Two outs, top of the 11th, bases empty. Will Smith stepped into the batter's box at Rogers Centre with his legs burning from 73 innings of catching, the most in World Series history. Game 3 had gone 18 frames. Game 7 was now in extras. Through it all, Smith had been behind the plate for every single pitch.

Shane Bieber, the Blue Jays' right-hander, worked the count to 2-0. Then he made his mistake, a slider that hung over the heart of the plate. Smith's ferocious right-handed swing sent it deep to left field, the same corner where Joe Carter had written his own October legend decades earlier.

Dodgers 5, Blue Jays 4. Three outs later, Los Angeles would be world champions.

"You dream of those moments," Smith said afterward. "Extra innings, put your team ahead. Yeah. I'll remember that one forever."

Making History

The swing made Smith the first player in MLB history to hit an extra-innings home run in a winner-take-all World Series game. Not a walk-off, but no less decisive. The typically stoic catcher rounded first base with his arms wide, unleashing a roar as his teammates poured onto the warning track.

"A 2-0 count offspeed home run?" said first baseman Freddie Freeman. "I hope people realize that that's not easy to do. A lot of us are taking offspeed in that situation. He was on it and hit it out. Like I said, he's the silent assassin."

Freeman continued: "He will push everything off. He cares more about our pitching staff and getting them through the games. For him to have that moment after signing a 10-year extension, I'm just so happy for him."

The Complete Performance

Smith didn't need the home run to validate his Fall Classic. With much of the Dodgers' offense struggling, he'd quietly delivered an excellent series at the plate, finishing with an .886 OPS and four extra-base hits.

But with Smith, offense is only half the story. The Dodgers' pitching staff was depleted and worn down, forced to navigate unfamiliar roles and constant high-leverage situations. Smith guided them through every inning.

"You can't say enough about Will, man," said Clayton Kershaw, who finished his career as a three-time World Series champion. "He just goes about his business, doesn't complain, catches 18 innings, flies through the night, catches again. His legs have to feel like Jell-O."

"He's calling all the pitches, helping all the pitching staff, guiding us all through it. He's a superstar. When you talk about superstars on our team, he's a superstar. He really is. He might not get the publicity of these other guys but he's a superstar."

Smith, characteristically, deflected. "It's just a special team," he said. "A special fight tonight from these guys."

Playing Through Pain

A month and a half earlier, it wasn't clear Smith would be available for the postseason at all. In September, he sustained a hairline fracture in his left hand and came off the bench in both Wild Card Series games against the Reds.

But Smith played through it for the rest of the playoffs. In the early stages of the World Series, he said he began to find his swing again. Manager Dave Roberts, needing a spark, moved Smith up to the No. 2 spot in the lineup. Smith delivered.

The Final Image

After his World Series-winning home run, Smith completed his high-fives and retreated to the bench to don his catching gear. Three outs later, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the World Series MVP, induced a game-ending double play.

Yamamoto turned and raised both hands skyward. In the background, symbolically, was Smith, racing to the mound to wrap Yamamoto in his arms.

The silent assassin. Three-time All-Star. Three-time World Series champion. One of the best catchers in baseball. And now, forever, the man who hit the home run that decided Game 7.
