UFC and IBM Launch AI-Powered In-Fight Insights Platform
IBM and UFC have unveiled their latest technological collaboration with the launch of In-Fight Insights.

IBM and UFC have unveiled their latest technological collaboration with the launch of In-Fight Insights, an AI-driven platform that delivers real-time statistics, milestones, and records during live UFC events. The system, built with IBM watsonx, is set to debut at UFC 322: DELLA MADDALENA vs. MAKHACHEV at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, November 15.

The new platform represents a significant evolution in how fight fans consume live mixed martial arts content, tapping into more than 13.2 million UFC data points collected from over 20 years of fights and more than 2,400 current and former UFC athletes. As IBM's role as the Official AI Partner of UFC, this technology aims to enhance the viewing experience for both hardcore enthusiasts and casual fans.

Real-Time Intelligence During Live Action

Part of the UFC Insights Engine built with IBM watsonx, the In-Fight Insights capability marks the most advanced evolution of the system to date and the first live in-fight integration since the IBM-UFC partnership launched one year ago in November 2024. Unlike previous iterations that focused on pre- and post-fight analysis, this new system operates in real-time, identifying and triggering alerts for key fight moments as they happen.

The platform is designed to monitor and report when notable events occur, such as record-setting strike totals, winning streaks, and other significant milestones. This immediate contextual understanding gives broadcasters the ability to share meaningful insights with viewers at the exact moment they become relevant.

Alon Cohen, Executive Vice President of Innovation for TKO, emphasized the technical achievement behind the system. "UFC Insights Engine built with IBM watsonx is a complex AI package that goes deep to unearth new, real-time insights for fans in seconds," Cohen explained. "Anyone who uses AI tools knows they are normally able to go deep or fast, but not both. In collaborating with IBM for these new in-fight stats though, we have optimized Insights Engine to accomplish both, a true game-changer."

Enhancing the Broadcast Experience

The integration of In-Fight Insights into UFC broadcasts will provide commentators, production teams, and fans with immediate access to contextual information that enriches the storytelling of each fight. While the existing Pre-Fight Insights will continue to provide analysis before the opening bell, the new in-fight capability adds another layer of intelligence to the live viewing experience.

All data generated during fights will be stored in the UFC Insights Engine for archival and analytical purposes, creating a growing repository of fight statistics that can be used for future analysis and content creation.

Jonathan Adashek, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications at IBM, highlighted the broader implications of the technology. "The launch of In-Fight Insights is the latest example of how AI is really changing the game for the live sports viewing experience for fans around the world," Adashek said. "It's a testament to the commitment of UFC to always think outside the octagon, to best capture the enormous storytelling potential and human element of the action going on inside the cage."

Building on a Year of Innovation

Since announcing their partnership in November 2024, UFC and IBM have worked to establish the foundation of the UFC Insights Engine, aggregating and analyzing the organization's extensive library of fight data. The goal has been to create more personalized and data-driven fan experiences across all touchpoints.

The In-Fight Insights addition is part of a broader effort to scale the Insights Engine across all UFC platforms, including live broadcasts, pre-event programming, social media channels, and in-venue activations. As mixed martial arts continues to expand its global reach, with UFC boasting more than 700 million fans and approximately 318 million social media followers, the organization is leveraging AI and data analytics to deepen fan engagement.

UFC produces more than 40 live events annually in prestigious arenas around the world, distributing programming to more than 950 million broadcast and digital households across more than 210 countries and territories. The organization's athlete roster features fighters representing more than 75 countries, making it a truly global sport.

The Future of Sports Broadcasting

The launch of In-Fight Insights represents a significant milestone in the evolution of sports broadcasting technology. By combining IBM's AI capabilities with UFC's rich data archive, the partnership is creating new ways to tell the stories that unfold inside the octagon. The system's ability to identify meaningful moments in real-time and deliver them to broadcasters and fans instantly demonstrates how artificial intelligence can enhance live sports without disrupting the natural flow of the event.

As AI technology continues to advance, the UFC-IBM partnership suggests a future where sports broadcasts become increasingly intelligent and personalized, providing viewers with deeper insights and more engaging content than traditional commentary alone could offer.

Built with IBM watsonx and leveraging over 13.2 million data points from 20+ years of fights, the system debuts at UFC 322 on November 15 at Madison Square Garden. The platform represents a significant evolution from pre-fight analysis to live, in-the-moment intelligence, giving broadcasters and fans immediate access to contextual information as fights unfold.
